Gardner Minshew II 2020 Outlook: Can Kill Two Stones With One Bird
5 years agoJacksonville Jaguars second-year quarterback Gardner Minshew has a ton of swagger and nothing to lose, a deadly combination. He was a sixth-round pick out of Washington State and was thrust into action last year when Nick Foles went down with a fractured clavicle in Week 1. To everyone’s surprise, he looked like a polished veteran in his first game as he completed 23-of-25 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. He never lit up the stat sheet, but he played every down like it was his last, and he routinely made big plays in tough situations. He finished the year with 285 completions for 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns, and six interceptions. His stunning mustache coupled with his devil-may-care attitude quickly made him a fan favorite, and his willingness to put the team on his back when it felt like all was lost quickly made him a player favorite. The Jaguars brass appears to be comfortable letting him take the reins of this offense in 2020 as the team just signed Mike Glennon to be his backup, who is not a threat to steal any playing time. Perhaps the Jaguars are in tank mode and looking towards the 2021 NFL Draft to find their franchise quarterback, but rest assured 6’1” signal-caller is not going to let that stop him from balling out and trying to prove his worth. He has an excellent supporting cast with D.J. Chark Jr. on the outside and Dede Westbrook in the slot, and the big bruising Leonard Fournette in the backfield. Additionally, the former Washington State Cougar has wheels and he is not afraid to use them, which he put on display when he rushed for at least 25 yards eight times last year, and his rushing ability provides fantasy owners with a solid floor of production. He currently sits at QB26 in ADP, so he is basically free, and he has all the skills and the weapons to finish inside the top-12 if everything goes right. Not to mention, the Jaguars Defense is in shambles so he should be in catch-up mode most of the time, which is great for his potential fantasy outlook. After all, garbage-time points count too! Minshew should be drafted as a low-end QB2, but don’t be surprised if he creeps his way into the top-12.
