Forrest Whitley 2020 Outlook: High Risk, High Reward After Ugly 2019
5 years agoWhat an ugly, ugly season Forrest Whitley had in 2019. His control completely deserted him and then he got hurt. He walked 44 batters on the season in just 59.2 innings. Triple-A hitters whacked him around to the tune of a .343 batting average. And whispers started that Whitley had make-up and maturity concerns which may have exacerbated his issues in 2019. He eventually found himself back in Rookie ball trying to work his way back into shape. When healthy, though, there is no denying the fact that he has some of the best stuff in the minors with four potentially-plus offerings including an upper-90s fastball. If we’re looking for silver linings on the season, Whitley attended the Arizona Fall League and was very good against some of the better offensive prospects in the game (although many were A-ball or Double-A hitters). He posted a 2.88 ERA in six starts and, more importantly, posted an encouraging K-BB of 32-9 in 25 innings.
