7 months agoThe Oakland Athletics designated relief pitcher Fernando Rodney for assignment over the weekend, and they have seven days within the transaction to either trade or place him on irrevocable outright waivers. It just wasn't working this season for the veteran, who had a 9.42 ERA with opponents hitting .345 against him in 17 relief appearances. Manager Bob Melvin has gotten away from him over the past month. "Obviously some performance comes into play," Melvin said. "I will say that he's not used to pitching in a role like that. He's used to getting regular work, and we were not giving that to him." He is the current oldest player in the majors at 42, but his fastball was still clocked at 95-96 mph. He might latch on with another organization, but his days as a fantasy option are over.--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBaller
