Elijah McGuire 2019 Outlook: New York Has a New Pass-Catching Back
6 years agoIn previous years, Elijah McGuire showed promise as a receiving threat out of the backfield for the Jets. He’s had to compete with the likes of Isaiah Crowell, Bilal Powell, and Matt Forte in the past for snaps. Crowell was signed by the Raiders, Powell, unfortunately, suffered a neck injury in 2018, and Forte retired prior to the 2018 season. McGuire was in line for a significant increase in touches in 2019 but then Le’Veon Bell happened. Bell is obviously one of the most dangerous three-down backs in the NFL and is a true workhorse. The Jets also signed Ty Montgomery who has been a formidable pass catcher out of the backfield considering he’s a converted WR. Finally, Bilal Powell was brought back and signed a deal with the Jets on June 10th. With all these variables, it’s just tough to see a scenario where McGuire is a factor for the Jets this year unless there are injuries ahead of him on the depth chart. He’s a great talent who is incredibly elusive and could be a great addition to another team if it came to that.
