Dominic Smith Enters 2018 With Something To Prove
7 years agoThe fantasy community rejoiced down the stretch of 2017 when the New York Mets finally called up top first baseman prospect Dominic Smith. Smith didn’t hold up his end of the bargain in his debut, though, and could only muster a putrid slash line of .198/.262/.395 across 183 plate appearances (he did hit nine home runs, though). Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson has said numerous times this offseason that Smith simply did not do enough to show he’s earned the starting first base job, and has been open about looking for someone to Smith to platoon with. Trading Smith doesn’t seem off the table, either. As such, predicting Smith’s plate appearance total in 2018 is a murky game, at best. If he can come out of the gate hot, that would likely keep 2017’s outfielder/first baseman Jay Bruce in the outfield for awhile longer. We wouldn’t bet on Smith having a massive fantasy breakout in 2018 with all the noise, but he’s obviously a prime player to own in dynasty formats moving forward.
