Domingo Santana Impresses But Might Be On Outside
7 years agoDomingo Santana had a breakout season in his first full year in the majors. Some aspects of his performance contradict his historical output. The stats that made Santana's 2017 season particularly impressive was his home runs (30) and stolen bases (15). He had a batting average of .278 and a .372 weighted on-base average, which is very good. There is no history that proves the stolen bases are sustainable, however. Santana demonstrated plenty of power, but also has tremendous strikeout tendency as well, 29.3% in 2017. He was selective with pitches, as he only swung at pitches outside of the zone 27.3%. He also had 39.7% hard-hit combined with an above league average 27.4% line-drive. If he can maintain these rates, he can continue to be productive. The Brewers made some key additions to their roster this offseason, forcing Santana to potentially lose playing time, unless positional changes are made. Santana will be an asset in on-base percentage leagues if he gets consistent playing time; he had a season of very good base on balls and OBP, 12% and .371 respectively. He is being drafted near the sixth round. If you are concerned a batting average and stolen base decline, take this opportunity to market last year's stats and package him in a trade to improve your roster.
