DeVante Parker 2022 Outlook: Low-Volume Passing Offense Likely Suppresses Fantasy Value
3 years agoAfter seven seasons with the Miami Dolphins, DeVante Parker has new life in 2022 after being traded to the New England Patriots. In theory, it might sound like a good thing for his fantasy value, as he no longer has to contend with Jaylen Waddle, Mike Gesicki, and now Tyreek Hill for targets. Parker can presumably become one of the top options in the Patriots' passing game, but he'll have to contend with a ton of other guys, including Jakobi Meyers, Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne, Hunter Henry, and Jonnu Smith. Those guys might not be as talented as Waddle and Hill, but there's no shortage of target competition in New England. To make matters worse for Parker's fantasy value, the Patriots have been one of the most run-heavy teams in the NFL since Tom Brady's departure. In the last two seasons, they've averaged just 29.7 pass attempts per game, which is bottom-five in the league. It's clear Bill Belichick wants to establish the run with guys like Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson, and Pierre Strong. Last season, Meyers led all Patriots receivers with 7.9 targets per game. The next-highest target earner was Hunter Henry at just 4.7 targets per game. Furthermore, Jones only threw for 22 touchdowns last season and the Patriots finished the season 10-7. With the Patriots winning by pounding the rock, it's possible Parker only sees 4-5 targets per game. He's also only eclipsed four touchdowns in once in his seven-year career, so don't expect a ton of those either playing in an offense that threw just 22 passing touchdowns a season ago. Consider Parker a WR5 or so this season.
