Derwin James 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Argument For #1 Overall?
1 year agoLos Angeles Chargers defensive back Derwin James has always struggled with injuries, and 2022 was no different. He missed three games last year, which is why he finished 25th amongst defensive backs in solo tackles. Despite missing time, James still had the seventh-highest solo tackles per game rate among DBs last year. He also finished third at his position in sacks, sixth in total tackles, and seventh in forced fumbles. The former Seminole put together even better per-game output in 2021, establishing a consistently high floor and ceiling when healthy. The FSU alum is still just 26 years old, so he's a tremendous asset in redraft and dynasty formats. His combination of high tackle rates and big play ability make him a DB1 in any IDP scoring format, too. Given how thin the DB position remains in fantasy, with opposing offenses avoiding shutdown corners and very few DBs offering consistent production across the board, there remains a strong argument that James is the top overall fantasy defender in drafts this year. While stud linebackers and edge rushers might score more total points, James offers consistently high production at one of fantasy's thinnest positions.
