D'Ernest Johnson 2023 Player Outlook: Battling For Complementary Role In First Year In Jacksonville
1 year agoAfter four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, running back D'Ernest Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars to provide RB depth. In his four years in Cleveland, he had 141 carries for 738 yards (5.2 yards per attempt) and three touchdowns, adding 31 catches on 39 targets for 229 additional yards in 64 games (two starts). He had only four carries for 17 yards in 15 games (zero starts) in 2022. Travis Etienne Jr. is Jacksonville's clear lead back, but the Jags could be looking to ease his workload a bit, and Johnson will have a chance to compete with JaMycal Hasty and Snoop Conner for complementary backfield work. However, the team's selection of rookie Tank Bigsby in the third round this year could make it more difficult for Johnson to earn a spot on the roster at all. The 27-year-old has been very productive with the limited work he's seen in his four NFL seasons, but he'll need to beat out both Hasty and Conner in training camp to be worth a late-round flier in best-ball formats.
