David Montgomery 2019 Outlook: A Monster of the Midway
6 years agoWhen you trade two first-round and a second-round pick for a player like Khalil Mack you do not expect the team to then use their limited remaining draft capital to trade up for a player. That is exactly what the Chicago Bears did to grab their man in David Montgomery.
Not only is Jordan Howard and his 250 carries from 2018 now in Philadelphia but this move will also allow Tarik Cohen to be utilized more as a weapon and less as a necessity. The 5’11 and 222-pound Montgomery is far better suited for the pounding required for a running back in today’s NFL and with his pass catching ability, Matt Nagy has who he hopes will be his version of Kareem Hunt in this offense.
If Montgomery stays healthy all season his draft slot of the early eighth round could seem silly based on his return. With Mitch Trubisky looking to take another step forward, and Allen Robinson and Anthony Miller providing a solid wide receiver group, the run game will be used to keep that elite defense fresh and on the sideline for a majority of games. If David Montgomery does what we can reasonably project from him this season. which is to say gain the 250 carries left by Jordan Howard while adding 35 to 45 receptions then he will be the number one rookie running back, not Josh Jacobs.
As the season gets closer his draft price will continue to rise. But as long as it stays below the third-round, you should be buying with confidence, as he will be the starting back for the Bears in the early part of the season. This is opposed to Miles Sanders in Philadelphia or possibly Devin Singletary in Buffalo, who may get their shot later in the year. If he can open the season as the starter, look for him to finish as a top 15 RB for fantasy in 2019 and moving forward.
