Darrel Williams 2021 Outlook: A Valuable Insurance Policy
4 years agoKansas City Chiefs running back Darrel Williams is in an interesting position entering 2021. After finishing last season with just 285 scrimmage yards on 57 touches, Williams will look to break out this fall. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the team's first-round selection in 2020, is clearly the top dog in the backfield at the moment, but the team's pecking order is much less clear after him. The Chiefs released 2020 opt-out Damien Williams this offseason, removing a roadblock to production for Darrel. Former star Le'Veon Bell has also left the squad, adding further uncertainty to the team's running back situation. New addition Jerick McKinnon will seek the team's backup role, but his injury history and struggles last season - he averaged just 3.9 yards per carry with San Francisco - could work against him. Other runners, such as Darwin Thompson and Elijah McGuire, should be non-factors fantasy-wise. Therefore, should Edwards-Helaire falter and/or sustain injuries in his sophomore campaign, it appears likely that Darrel Williams would be the main beneficiary. This would be a boon for fantasy managers, as Kansas City's offense is a gold mine for production. With Williams going as the RB60 in drafts since the NFL Draft this spring, he possesses an immense amount of value as a later-round choice given his potential. He would be a great insurance policy for Edwards-Helaire managers, and he would also be worth drafting as an RB5/6 for non-CEH managers as well.
