Danny Duffy 2020 Outlook: No Upside to Be Found For 31-Year-Old Lefty
5 years agoDanny Duffy has had hot streaks throughout his career in which he's looked like he could be on the verge of a breakout. While not the picture of health, he's made at least 23 starts in every year since 2014, and through 2017 he had kept his ERA fairly respectable every season. Unfortunately, Duffy has regressed severely in the last two years in most metrics. One of Duffy's calling cards used to be keeping the ball in the ballpark, and that went out the window in 2018/2019; he registered 1.34 and 1.45 HR/9 marks, respectively. Duffy's velocity was down in 2019, and while he leaned into his slider more he posted just a middling 20.7 K%. While it's premature to consider Duffy "washed", there isn't much to point to that indicates anything than some modest variance in his career lines. Duffy should be no more than a back-of-your-rotation fantasy option, if he's drafted at all.
