Damien Williams 2021 Outlook: A Path Exists
4 years agoDamien Williams did not play in 2020 after opting out due to Covid. We last saw Williams making a strong case for Super Bowl LIV MVP following his 133-yard effort in the Chiefs victory over the 49ers. Williams had moments of relevancy in 2019, but with the Chiefs spending a 2020 first round pick on Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams displaying competency, they did not see a need to bring back Damien Williams. He signed with the Bears where David Montgomery is the clear lead back, but all hope is not lost for Williams. The start of Montgomery's 2020 season was in great jeopardy due to an August hamstring strain and he missed a game during the season. Even with Tarik Cohen back, a Montgomery injury would not lead to any change in Cohen's role. Instead, Williams would step in and assume the lion's (or should I say, bear's) share of Montgomery's work. Williams has no standalone fantasy value, but there is legitimate RB2 upside in the event of a Montgomery injury. Williams does not need to be taken in redraft leagues, but keep his name in your head as the operative pickup should Montgomery miss time.
