Cody Parkey 2019 Outlook: Will Have To Compete To Find Job
5 years agoFree agent kicker Cody Parkey will begin NFL training camp without a job after an infamously poor year with the Chicago Bears in 2018. Parkey was signed to a two-year deal the previous offseason to stabilize a position that has been a carousel for the Bears the past three seasons. The 27-year-old was coming off a 2017 season with the Dolphins where he connected on 21-of-23 field goals attempts, including 26-of-29 on extra-point attempts. But things turned south early for Parkey, missing a critical field goal to beat the Dolphins in overtime in Week 6, then missing two field goals and two extra-point attempts (all four hitting the uprights) in a win over the Lions in Week 10. The Bears would make the playoffs but, once again, Parkey failed to deliver in a key moment. With the Bears needing a field goal in the final seconds to advance against the Eagles in the NFC Wild Card Round, Parkey hit the goal post one last time and the Bears were eliminated. Vilified by a city and an awkward "Good Morning America" interview later, Parkey is now without a job with only a few weeks before camps begin. For a kicker who went 23-for-30 on field goals, missed three extra points and 'doinked' a crucial field goal in a playoff game, it isn't a huge surprise that Parkey is still looking for work. This is the NFL, however, and a time will certainly come when teams workout Parkey at some point during the season. But until he lands on a team and proves he has put last season behind him, he is currently not fantasy viable.
