Chris Carson 2022 NFL Player Outlook: Career-Ending Neck Injury Forces Retirement
2 years agoChris Carson has been a revelation for the Seattle Seahawks over the past 4 seasons, averaging 19 touches for 92 yards from scrimmage and 15.5 fantasy points per game from 2018-2020. These numbers are even more impressive from a seventh-round pick in the NFL Draft. 2022 was seemingly no different for Carson as he ran for 232 yards and scored three touchdowns in the first four weeks. Unfortunately, he suffered a neck injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season, and some feared it may be career-ending. In late July, Carson announced he is retiring from football. He is expected to be released after a failed-physical designation. Carson underwent disc fusion surgery in December and has yet to resume any activities in the offseason. The situation became additionally worrisome after head coach Pete Carroll said back in June that the team had no idea if Carson would be able to play again. Despite his injury concerns, the Seahawks prepared for life without Chris Carson. They signed late-season breakout Rashaad Penny to a one-year deal, and they drafted the 2021 Doak Walker Award winner Kenneth Walker III in the second round of the NFL Draft. Penny has earned the starting role after rushing for at least 135 yards in five of his six games as a starter and finishing as the overall RB1 in fantasy football from Week 13 on. Seattle's primary running back will now come down to Penny and Walker, with Penny being the front-runner heading into training camp.
