Carlos Martinez Looking for More Consistency in 2018
7 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez will go into the 2018 season looking for an overall more consistent performance. Martinez posted strong numbers in 2017, going 12-11 with a 3.64 ERA, but he faded noticeably in the second half of the season. Martinez struck out 9.53 batters per nine innings and walked 3.12 in that span. His FIP (3.91) and xFIP (3.63) aren't those of a true ace, but he's shown the upside at times of one. The 26-year-old is difficult to place in the starter's ranks because he has excellent upside but still hasn't quite turned that corner yet. He could be a bargain or an overpay, but the safe bet is to wait on him a bit in drafts.
