Brendan Rodgers 2020 Outlook: Shoulder Injury Clouds Potential Impact
5 years agoBrendan Rodgers faces an uphill battle for playing time in Colorado in 2020, even though he looks to be MLB-ready (if healthy). The organization features a lot of middle infield depth with the likes of Trevor Story, Ryan McMahon, Garrett Hampson as well as the minor league signing of Chris Owings. Rodgers also has to overcome a serious shoulder injury that cut short his 2019 season and it remains to be seen how much time he’ll miss early on in 2020. When healthy, he’s shown the ability to hit for both power and average. In 37 games at Triple-A, he hit .350 with an excellent line-drive rate of 25% and an Isolated Power (ISO) of .273. His struggles in 25 big league games were the result of issues making consistent contact (33% strikeout rate). Rodgers received inconsistent playing time in The Show and he was clearly pressing when he had a chance to play. As spring training approached, optimism was rampant that Rodgers would not miss much of 2020 due to last year’s injury. But it was a serious injury and it may take time for the middle infielder to shake off the rust.
