Brandon Phillips Could Be A Sleeper
7 years agoFree agent second baseman Brandon Phillips showed decent power and speed in 2017, but still needs to find a home for the 2018 season. While his speed has faded, he still hit .285 with 13 home runs and 11 stolen bases, his third straight season where he tallied at least those bench marks. Phillips is two years removed from a 2015 season where he stole 23 bases and he also has double-digit home runs in 11 of the last 12 seasons. His numbers dropped off after a trade to the Angels (.652 OPS in 24 games), but he has hit at least .275 in nine of the last 12 seasons as well. The 37-year-old scored 81 runs in 2017, his best tally since 2012, and he could still be a decent producer at the top of a lineup. Phillips' 21.7% soft hit ball rate was the second-worst of his career (22% in 2011), but his 22.2% line drive rate was still better than his career average (19.6%). In fact, Phillips has had a line drive rate over 20% in each of the last four seasons, helping him post a solid batting average even as he has aged. While Phillips' contact rate has dropped in each of the last three seasons, his 81.2% contact rate in 2017 was better than his 80.2% career rate. Depending on the team that Phillips lands on, he could him some deep sleeper value as a middle infielder. He is a good player to grab near the end of your draft.
