1 year agoTampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Blake Snell was named the 2018 American League Cy Young winner on Wednesday. Snell beat out Astros starter Justin Verlander and Indians ace Corey Kluber for the award. The left-hander only threw 180 2/3 innings this year, with only Clayton Kershaw (198 1/3 innings) the only other starter to win the award under 200 innings in a non-strike shortened year. Snell averaged only 5.8 innings per start and was on the disabled list for two weeks with left shoulder fatigue. Still, he was the only 21-game winner in the majors and had a 1.89 ERA and miniscule .178 average against. He allowed two or fewer runs in 27 of his 31 starts. Although Snell may not be as effective in 2019, he should be expected to throw more innings with better health.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
