Anthony Firkser 2021 Outlook: Just Call Him Opportunity
4 years agoTargets, touchdowns, and tight ends might not only be one of the best alliterations in football, but simply a true statement. The tight end landscape is in a unique position where if your TE catches one touchdown, he'll probably crack the top 12 on a given week. However, when we are looking at depth tight ends, not only do we want touchdowns, but we want consistency - cue the need for targets. The Titans have the second most vacated targets (215) in the league heading into 2021 after losing Jonnu Smith, Corey Davis, and others. To cover for this, the team brought in Josh Reynolds, spent a day three pick on Dez Fitzpatrick, and retained Firkser. That's not much. Last year, we saw Smith start the season as the overall TE2 after three weeks. His fantasy demise correlated perfectly with the return of A.J. Brown. Although Brown is still there, we have seen this offense lean on the tight end as a receiving option. If you wait until the end of your draft to select a TE, Firkser is a great value. He should be in line for 80+ targets on a very efficient offense. If he doesn't display fantasy value over the first few weeks, you can drop him without any repercussions.
06/07 Update: Tenessee has managed to pry Julio Jones away from the Falcons and officially become the league's best trio of skill players. Unfortunately, Jones will immediately step into the vacated targets that made Firkser an interesting late-round tight end. However, it's not all doom and gloom for the 26-year-old breakout candidate. Jones is not known for his red-zone prowess, but he does immediately make this offense exponentially more explosive. As a result, if Tennesee finds themselves in the red-zone more frequently, with their efficiency you can expect more touchdowns will be available. If Firkser can become a red-zone threat for this offense, there is a world he ends the season with 5+ touchdowns and cracks the top 12 at the position.
