Andrew Miller 2019 Outlook: Elite Reliever Blocked; Value Suffers
6 years agoAndrew Miller will enter his 14th season in the majors, hoping to return to form after a disappointing 2018. The veteran reliever had a successful tenure with the Cleveland Indians, being a big contributor to their postseason success. However, in a 2018 riddled with various injuries, Miller put up his worst numbers since 2012. He finished with a 4.24 ERA and a 2.81 K/BB ratio. Just two years ago the southpaw's K/BB was a staggering 23.0. Miller's struggles in 2018 were likely an anomaly, due to a .329 BABIP, positional instability under Terry Francona, and various injuries. Entering 2019 on the St. Louis Cardinals, his seventh major league squad, the reliever is listed as the set-up man to the 22-year-old closer Jordan Hicks. It is easy to see why the Cards want Hicks to be their ninth-inning guy due to his electric velocity. However, the lack of control is alarming and could leave the door open to Miller taking the role at some point in the season. Miller has proven to be most valuable as a setup man, but in 2015 with the Yankees, he showed he can also be a dominant closer. At a minimum, he can be helpful for ratios and holds leagues in 2019 in nearly all but the shallowest mixed leagues, but if Hicks struggles and Miller returns to form as expected, he could to return to being one of the game’s best closers and far exceed his status as the 25th ranked RP.
