Aaron Rodgers 2020 Outlook: A Reliable, High-Floor QB1
5 years agoGreen Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers doesn't get to call his own shots at the draft, but if he did, chances are he'd have done something other than pick his future replacement and a third running back with the team's first two selections in 2020. Last year wasn't Rodgers' best statistical season by any stretch of the imagination, but the fact that he was able to throw for 4,002 yards and 26 touchdowns with a receiving corps that might as well have included Davante Adams and no one else might make 2019 one of his most impressive. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, that's more of a testament to Rodgers' value on an actual football field than in Sunday lineups. Green Bay did not adequately address its holes in the WR corps this offseason, meaning Adams is still the only downfield threat worth trusting at Lambeau. The Packers also ran the ball effectively and played admirably on defense in 2019, and their coaching staff won't be in a hurry to abandon such a formula after it resulted in a 13-3 record. The reality this creates from a fantasy standpoint is that Rodgers is no longer a guaranteed top-tier option at quarterback, and is better viewed as a high-floor pick. Depending on how we approach this reality on draft day, it could actually be a good thing. In the old days, you had to be one of the first two or three people in your league to draft a quarterback if you wanted Rodgers. At the moment, he's coming off the board in the seventh round as QB8 in 12-team, one-QB leagues, just behind Josh Allen. We can appropriately weigh his relative lack of pass-catching options while also acknowledging he's still Aaron Rodgers. The seventh round could turn out to be tremendous value for the future Hall-of-Famer if we're ready to strike the quarterback market at that juncture of the draft. Rodgers might not carry your fantasy team to the championship, but he's also not going to sink your lineup in any given week. And he's sure to win you a few here and there.
