Impact Fantasy Baseball Prospects: Shane Baz, Coby Mayo, Drew Thorpe

Drew Thorpe - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Draft Sleepers, Waiver Wire Pickups

It's Week 17 of the MLB season, and while we have seen plenty of rookies called up this season already, there are still some big names who are currently in the minors and could yet make an impact for their teams this Summer and/or Fall.

We love covering prospects here at RotoBaller, and in this piece, I wanted to highlight three fantasy baseball prospects who could make notable impacts for their teams (and your fantasy teams) as soon as they finally get to the big leagues.

These are players who have such massive potential that they should be stashed in all but the shallowest of leagues. I included the availability of each player in Yahoo leagues with each breakdown. Let's take a look at some of the hottest names in the minor leagues!

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and weekly lineup resources:

Shane Baz - SP, Tampa Bay Rays

Current Level: MLB
Availability: 64% rostered
2024 MLB stats: 1 GS, 0-1, 6 IP, 4.50 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 6 K’s, 1 BB, 10.5 H/9, 1.5 BB/9, 9 K/9
2024 AAA stats: 10 GS, 3-3, 39.1 IP, 4.12 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 44 K’s, 23 BB, 8.9 H/9, 5.3 BB/9, 10.1 K/9

At first, Shane Baz showed signs of rust with a 7.71 ERA and 9:13 K:BB over his first five starts during his minor-league rehab assignment from Tommy John surgery. After being kept at Triple-A Durham to sharpen up on his mechanics, the hard-throwing right-hander found his rhythm for a 1.57 ERA and 35:10 K:BB across the subsequent five appearances.

The 25-year-old former top prospect finally got his chance in the major-league spotlight after the Rays traded Aaron Civale away, making his highly-anticipated 2024 season debut with a difficult task on July 5 against the defending champion Texas Rangers in Arlington. Baz will draw another tough assignment in his next scheduled start at home against the division-rival New York Yankees, but he has a 2.45 ERA and 10 strikeouts in two appearances (7 1/3 IP) versus the Yankees in his career.

Until Jeffrey Springs makes his way back to Tampa Bay’s rotation, Baz’s ability to stabilize ratios makes him a must-roster fantasy player.

Coby Mayo - 3B, Baltimore Orioles

Current Level: Triple-A Norfolk
Availability: 12% rostered
2024 AAA stats: 59 G, .301/.383/.610, 18 HR, 54 RBI, 44 R, 3 SB

Watching his Triple-A Norfolk friends (Jackson Holliday, Heston Kjerstad, and Connor Norby) all get cracks in the majors, Coby Mayo is just going about his business by continuing to terrorize minor-league pitching. The young infielder doesn’t have anything left to prove on the farm, but the emergence of 2023 top prospect Jordan Westburg as Baltimore’s everyday third baseman has effectively prevented him from getting the call to The Show.

Mayo is still a candidate to be promoted sometime around the late-July trade deadline, but there’s also a decent chance we won’t see the 22-year-old slugger make his debut with the first-place O’s until September. With speed merchant Jorge Mateo and Ramon Urias not giving the team much to write home about offensively, Mayo will continue to be an option as a potential infield upgrade while waiting in the wings.

Drew Thorpe - SP, Chicago White Sox

Level: MLB
Availability: 24% rostered
2024 MLB stats: 5 GS, 3-1, 26.2 IP, 3.71 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 18 K’s, 14 BB, 5.3 H/9, 2.6 BB/9, 8.4 K/9
2024 AA stats: 11 GS, 7-1, 60 IP, 1.35 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 56 K’s, 17 BB, 5.4 H/9, 4.7 BB/9, 6.1 K/9

One of the lone bright spots on the last-place ChiSox, Drew Thorpe has fared well during his first taste of big-league action. Well, it’s also important to read into the fact that each of his best showings has come against some of MLB’s most putrid offenses (Mariners, Tigers, Rockies, and Marlins).

The 23-year-old rookie righty doesn’t throw very hard (91.0 mph average fastball velocity). Still, he’s proven in a short sample size that he’s adept at keeping loud contact to a minimum (84.3 mph average exit velocity).

While Thorpe, Chicago’s No. 3 prospect for 2024, looks like a fine streamer in the proper setup for fantasy purposes, that won’t be the case when he toes the rubber on July 10 against a red-hot Minnesota Twins lineup that’s scoring 6.7 runs per game through 26 contests since June 9.
