Yesterday's Studs and Duds: Fantasy Baseball Recap from 5/28/16

With it being Memorial Day weekend and all, I'm sure many of you are at the beach or on vacation. Unfortunately, this may result in some of your baseball studies being neglected. Every day, we will be taking a quick look at the best and worst fantasy baseball performers from yesterday's games. It's important to keep close tabs on what's going on around the league, especially early in the MLB season, and that's what we are here to help out with. Here are the studs and duds from May 28th to get you all caught up.

Editor’s Note: to read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily. Prefer using your phone? Our free waiver wire app is available for download in the Apple Store.

Studs from 5/28/16

Danny Valencia (OAK, 3B/OF): Just as he was starting to cool off from his torrid stretch, Valencia reminded fantasy owners not to cut bait just yet. The powerful righty went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and three runs scored.

Brandon Belt (SF, 1B/OF): A cold spell and then an injury have capped Belt's value for a while now. However, a trip to Coors is usually a good fix for a cold spell. Belt went 3-for-5 with a run scored and could finally be heating up. He should be started for the rest of the Coors series.

Ryan Zimmerman (WAS, 1B): He's not what he used to be, but on Saturday he reminded us just how good he once was. Z-pack went 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBI. The power is still in there, it just doesn't quite justify the subpar average and inconsistency.

David Ortiz (BOS, DH): Big Papi continues his sendoff tour in style. The lovable slugger (yes this coming from a Yankees fan) went yard again on Saturday. He went 2-for-5 with the aforementioned solo shot and is up to 13 dingers on the season. By the way he's also hitting a cool .339 with 46 RBI. I had to check that to make sure it wasn't a typo.

Chase Utley (LAD, 2B): Utley is seriously making himself one of the more hated players in New York, well at least by Mets fans. After getting thrown behind by Thor, Utley would hit a solo shot and a grand slam in the game. Talk about throwing salt in the wound.

Howie Kendrick (LAD, 2B/OF): Kendrick has been virtually irrelevant of late, but gave owners a little thrill Saturday. Kendrick went 2-for-4 with a solo blast and a steal. Nice to see but likely not going to happen very often.

Evan Longoria (TB, 3B): Longoria is another fantasy has-been who had a mini outburst Saturday. Taking advantage of some poor pitching by Michael Pineda, Longo hit a pitch a long way for a two-run shot. He would finish the afternoon with four RBI.

Buster Posey (SF, C/1B): Posey got to ring-around the bases twice on Saturday and was the difference in the game. He went 2-for-5 with the two jacks, and finished with six RBI. Ashes ashes, the Rox fell down when it came to containing the Giants' catcher.

Kyle Hendricks (CHC, SP): Hendricks spun a beauty on Saturday. The righty went the distance, allowing only one run on five hits and no walks. He struck out seven and has a sparkling .98 WHIP to go along with a 2.93 ERA. Hendricks continues his strong season, and with that juggernaut offense behind him the wins should keep pouring in.

Madison Bumgarner (SF, SP): MadBum pitched well in the pitching death trap that is Coors Field. He allowed only one run and struck out six Rox, however he would not factor in the decision. The bullpen was victimized by the Coors factor and blew the lead. Luckily for the Giants, Buster Posey and Co. bailed them out.

Duds from 5/28/16

Alex Rodriguez (NYY, DH): A-Rod went 0-for-5 on Saturday, and has only one hit since returning from the DL. That one hit may have been a home run, but the Yankees need him to produce if they have any chance of being competitive this season.

Carlos Correa (HOU, SS): Correa received so much hype coming into the season and has been ultimately disappointing so far. Correa went 0-for-4 with four runners left on base in Saturday's contest. Hopefully he picks it up soon.

Cameron Maybin (DET, OF): Maybin gets a pass since he's been so good. That said it's still disappointing to see an 0-for-4 with how hot he's been.

Marcus Stroman (TOR, SP): The guy who is supposed to be the Blue Jays' ace looked like anything but that on Saturday. He got crushed by the BoSox to the tune of 11 hits and seven earned runs. OUCH!

Cesar Vargas (SD, SP): Vargas' performance against the Diamondbacks was flat out awful. Seven earned in 1.2 innings. He allowed more hits (six) and runs than outs recorded. I feel bad for anyone who started him.

Gio Gonzalez (WAS, SP): It looks like Gonzalez may be coming back down to earth. The Washington southpaw got beaten soundly on Saturday. Six earned, six hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. He did strike out six but it wasn't pretty out there.

Michael Pineda (NYY, SP): This one hurts me, but man did Pineda stink it up out there. It's the freaking Rays! You'd think he'd have a decent game at least...but no. Pineda gave up six earned on nine hits in 3.2 IP. He didn't walk anyone, but that doesn't lessen the blow for Yankee fans or anyone who started him in fantasy.

David Robertson (CHW, RP): D-Rob got DEstroyed when he came on for the ninth. The Chi Sox had a six run lead entering the ninth, with their closer on the mound. What could go wrong right? The answer is EVERYTHING. Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing six earned on four hits and two walks. The Royals would complete their insane comeback and win 8-7.
