In this piece, RotoBaller delves deeper into three players who are currently in our Daily Updated Waiver Wire Watch List that you should look to own over the next few weeks. These are fringe players, available on the waiver wire in many leagues, who could have an immediate impact on your team. If you invest a roster spot in one of these guys and catch a hot streak, you could then trade for a more stable player, or roll the dice on continued hot performance. Either way, you could see a fairly nice return from any of these players.
Bronson Arroyo, SP (CIN) – There aren’t many pitchers who can boast of making at least 29 starts in every season since 2004, but Arroyo is one of them. Remarkably durable and possessing terrific control, the longtime Reds starter has proven that 2011’s outrageous homer-fest was simply an outlier, and he’s much more the hurler that has been an above-average innings-eater during most of his tenure in Cincinnati. He won’t get you many strikeouts, and left-handed hitters will smack him around a bit, but he’ll frequently pitch deep into games, toss the odd shutout, and tamp down on righties enough that you can expect 210 IP, 14 wins and a 3.75 ERA. That’s a solid addition to any fantasy roster.
Matt Dominguez, 3B (HOU) – Acquired from Miami in the Carlos Lee deal, Dominguez is an excellent fielder who flashed good power potential in a 31-game cameo last season. Unfortunately for the rookie, that power didn’t quite carry over into March/April of this season, when he went homerless in 99 plate appearances. But as 'luck' would have it, Dominguez plays for the Astros, where players enjoy a certain job security since there’s virtually no shot of a bad stretch resulting in a trip to the minors. The consequence has been a May that has seen the former 2007 first-round pick hack his way to seven bombs, while driving in 16 runs and slugging .538. Dominguez has weak on-base skills and a terrible BB/K ratio, but the power upside is real-- he could hit 20 homers with the playing time he’ll see in Houston. He’s worth a speculative add, or at least a spot on your scout team.
Kendrys Morales, 1B (SEA) – It’s been a long and arduous road back from 2010’s freak leg injury, but Morales-- who was a quietly decent option last season-- appears to finally be hitting on all cylinders after a tough start to his career in Seattle. Since the calendar flipped to May, the Cuban first baseman has hit a scorching .346/.398/.580 with 13 extra-base hits in just 88 plate appearances and is now firmly entrenched in the Seattle cleanup spot. Somehow Morales is still available in 55% of Yahoo leagues, so remember: this player is still just 30 years old, he was a premier fantasy option in 2009, and he's entering free agency. Pounce if still available.
